Acharya Hemchandra Jain was a scholar, poet, and polymath, who wrote on grammar, philosophy, skills and contemporary history. Known as an eloist by his contemporaries, he achieved the title of Kalikalasarjan, "All the Gnani of the Kali Yuga".

Hemchandra was born in Dhandhuka, in present day Kartik Sud Purnima (Kartik month full moon day) was born. Their date of birth is different according to the source, but 1088 are generally accepted. His father, Chaching, was a Vaishnav to become a demoniac. His mother was Pahini Jain. Hemchandra's original name was Chengdev. In his childhood, Jain Sadhuavachandra Suri visited Dhandhuka and was impressed by the young Himachandra's intellect. His mother and uncle agreed with Devchandra against their father, that Hemchandra was his disciple. Devchandra took Hemchandra to Khambhat where Hemachandra was kept under the supervision of local governor Udayana. Chanchiga was in place of Udaya to get her son back, but she was very frightened by the kind of treatment she received, she decided to leave herself with her son Devchandra.

After some years, Jain monks were introduced to Hemchandran on Magh Sud Chauth (on the bright half of the month of Maghday) and it was named Somchandra's new name. Originally, Devchandra helped Suri in the ceremony. He was trained in religious speeches, philosophies, logic and grammar and became well aware of Jain and non-Jain scriptures. At the age of 21, he was given the Acharya of Ajtambar School of Jain religion at Nagaur in present-day Rajasthan. At this time, his name was Hemchandra Suri.
Hemchandra and Sidharaj :
At that time, the Chaulkya dynasty of Gujarat was ruled by Anilvada (Patan). It is not certain when Hemchandra visited Patan for the first time. For example, Jain monks are glazed for eight months and live in one place during Chaturmas, four months of monsoon, they started living at Patan during this period and produced most of their works there.
